Arlo Pro Wireless Camera Review: Is It Still Worth It or Outdated in 2026?

I decided to look into the Arlo Pro Wireless Camera because I wanted a security camera that doesn’t require complicated wiring. The idea of a completely wireless setup that I could place anywhere, indoors or outdoors, sounded convenient. But at the same time, I’ve seen how a lot of smart home products promise simplicity and reliability, then end up being frustrating long term, so I wanted to see where this one actually stands.

Quick Take

The Arlo Pro is easy to install and genuinely convenient as a wireless camera, with good video quality and useful features. But it’s not perfect. The need for a base station, limitations like no continuous recording, and mixed long-term user experiences make it feel slightly outdated compared to newer options.

What Is the Arlo Pro Wireless Camera?

The Arlo Pro is a battery-powered indoor/outdoor security camera designed for flexible placement without wiring.

Key features include:

  • Fully wireless design with rechargeable battery
  • Motion and sound detection alerts
  • Night vision
  • Two-way audio
  • Cloud storage with free and paid plans
  • Base station required for operation

It’s built as part of a wider smart home security system.

Why I Considered It

I wanted something I could install quickly without drilling or running cables. The flexibility of placing a camera anywhere and moving it if needed is a big advantage.

It also seemed like a reliable brand in the home security space, which made it worth looking into.

My Experience Using Arlo Pro

Getting it running is simple. You connect the base station to your router, sync the camera, and you’re ready to go. Compared to wired systems, it feels much easier and less stressful.

Once set up, the camera performs well in normal conditions. The video is clear in daylight, with good color and detail.

Night vision is also decent. It captures usable footage even in low light, though like most cameras in this range, it’s not perfect at the edges.

The motion detection system is one of the better parts. It can trigger alerts based on both sound and movement, and you can adjust sensitivity or schedules.

But after using it for a while, the limitations start to show.

First, it only records when motion or sound is detected. There’s no continuous recording option, which can be frustrating if something happens outside those triggers.

Second, the base station requirement feels outdated. It adds an extra step to setup and makes the system less flexible compared to newer cameras that connect directly to WiFi.

And then there’s performance consistency. While it works well most of the time, there are moments where delays or missed events can happen, especially depending on placement and signal.

What Other Users Are Saying

User feedback is mixed, which is something you need to take seriously.

Some people say it works well for years and provides reliable monitoring:

“used it for years… no problems at all”

Others are much more critical, especially over time:

“battery life is nowhere near advertised”
“constant signal dropping”

There are also complaints about:

  • Subscription pricing
  • App performance
  • Detection inconsistencies

So while it works, long-term reliability seems to depend on setup and expectations.

Build Quality & Design

The design is simple and modern. It’s compact, weatherproof, and easy to mount.

It doesn’t feel premium, but it’s practical and designed to blend into different environments.

The magnetic mount is actually a nice touch because it makes repositioning very easy.

Pros and Cons

Pros:
Completely wireless and easy to install
Good video quality in daylight
Reliable motion and sound detection
Works indoors and outdoors
Free cloud storage option available

Cons:
Requires a base station
No continuous recording
720p resolution feels outdated
Subscription needed for extended features
Mixed long-term reliability

Is Arlo Pro Worth It?

This depends on how you plan to use it.

If you want:

  • A simple, wire-free security setup
  • Basic monitoring with alerts
  • Easy installation

Then it still holds up.

But if you want:

  • Higher resolution (2K or 4K)
  • No base station
  • More advanced features

There are newer cameras that do it better.

Alternatives to Consider

After looking into it, there are newer options that improve on what Arlo Pro started:

  • Newer Arlo models (Pro 3, Pro 4, Ultra)
  • Eufy security cameras (no subscription focus)
  • Ring cameras (more ecosystem integration)

This is something I’ve noticed across a lot of tech products. Older “great” devices often become average as newer versions improve quickly.

Is It Outdated in 2026?

Not completely, but it’s definitely showing its age.

The biggest signs:

  • 720p resolution
  • Base station dependency
  • Limited recording options

Newer cameras are simply more flexible and powerful.

Honest Take

The Arlo Pro is a solid example of a product that was ahead of its time but is now being caught up by newer options.

It works, and it does what it promises, but it no longer feels like the best choice unless you specifically want its ecosystem or simplicity.

It’s convenient, but not cutting-edge anymore.

FAQ

Does Arlo Pro record continuously?
No, it records only when motion or sound is detected.

Do you need a subscription?
You can use it without one, but features are limited.

Is it easy to install?
Yes, setup is one of its biggest strengths.

Is it good for outdoor use?
Yes, it’s weatherproof and designed for both indoor and outdoor use.

How to Shop Safely for Security Cameras

When buying something like this, it’s important to look beyond brand name.

First, check whether the camera requires a hub or base station. That can affect how flexible your setup is.

Second, look at subscription requirements. Some cameras lock important features behind monthly payments.

Third, consider resolution and future-proofing. A camera might work now, but feel outdated quickly.

Finally, read real user experiences over time, not just first impressions. That’s where you’ll see issues like battery life, app performance, and reliability.
